STOCK REPORT.

Mr C. F. Barker reports: I held my usual monthly sale at my Patea yards on Wednesday, 26th instant. CattlK: Not a large number of entries, but the demand was good. I cleared all except one or two milch cows, as follow—--3 3-year-old steers at £5 ; 5 3-year-old store steers, £4 10s ; 2 2-year-old steers, £4 ss; 5 mixed steers and heifers, £3 10s; 29 yearling heifers, £1 13s Cd ; milch cows from £5 to £6.— Sheep : 150 ewes at 7s 9d ; 210 store ewes, 5s ; 53 lambs, 6s. The demand for fat sheep is good, but few offering.—Pxas : 24 yarded ; only a portion sold.— Houses : The usual number of inferior hacks entered ; prices low. Good medium draughts sold from £ls upwards. Cheap Cables, —Recent experience has shown that lighter, and therefore more economical telegraph cables are as useful as the old heavy ones, and with such less costly instruments a lower tariff will suffice. There is probability of a cable being laid to Canada, and the continents of Europe and Asia, at a cost which, it is expected, will admit of tariff of one shilling a word. In the Colony of New Zealand there are 63 County Councils, 316 Road Boards, 65 Boroughs, 9 Cattle Boards, 12 Education Boards, 13 River Boards, 11 High School Boards, 10 Waste Lauds Boards, 25 Harbor Boards, and a practically unlimited number of School Committees. “What’s in a dress?” asks a popular writer. Sometimes a good deal, and sometimes precious little. “ There’s music in the heir,” was a fond father’s remark, as he paced the midnight floor with his crying son in his arms.
