WELLINGTON AND MATAWATU RAILWAY.
As the time approaches for closing the share list of the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company (it closes on the 31st of this month), having so long advocated the great importance of this undertaking, we cannot help again bringing the matter before our readers, and at the same time expressing a hope that all who are interested in the progress of the city and its agricultural districts will immediately make their applications for shares. The provisional directors well deserve the warmest thanks of town and country for the zealous exertions they have made, and are still making, to bring about a satisfactory termination to their preliminary labors. Any hesitation there may have been in the minds of a number of our colonists to give hearty support to this great colonial work should at once be removed, in order that the stigma that Wellington has hitherto labored under may be removed—that of want of unanimity. Union is strength, and the next fortnight should be a busy time with those who have the charge of receiving applications for shares. Empty promises will not make the railway. We hope that when we next allude to the matter it will be to announce the registration of the company, and a detailed report of what has been done.— N.Z. Times.
