WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 90 subscrhers between WhenuaJcura and Waitotara, BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Monday Evening. The first of the series of dances, or rather quadrille assemblies, took place in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, and proved a great success, there being a capital attendance. Dancing was kept up until 12 o’clock, everybody seeming to enjoy themselves thoroughly', though in consequence of the wet weather several were prevented from attending. Sir William Fox’s lecture in aid of the funds of the Presbyterian Church took place on Friday. Sir William showed an intimate knowledge of the manners and customs of the East, observing that in one lecture he could not do justice to the subject, Altogether the account of his travels in the Holy Land was both interesting and instructive. The musical selections by the choir were well rendered. The Hall, however, was poorly' filled, the night being very boisterous. We are looking forward to a visit from our members, Messrs Bryme and Ballance, they having both addressed their constituents in Wanganui. I suppose they will favor the electors at this end of the district shortly. I notice Mr Ballance speaks strongly in favor of completing the gap in the railway line between here and Hawera, saying such lines could not be reproductive until the connecting links were completed. It is to be hoped he will bring some pressure to bear on the Government in the approaching session, the present “ leisurely manner” of proceeding with the line not being very satisfactory.
