HAWERA.

The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Manutahi and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday Evening. An inquest re the unfortunate accident that happened at the gravel pit on Tuesday evening last, was held at Normanby on Wednesday, when a verdict of accidental death was returned. The remains were taken to Wanganui the same night, in order that the funeral should take place yesterday. The deceased was a brother of Mr T, Ferry of the Occidental Hotel, Wanganui, The victims of the pig-sbooting accident are doing very well, although still on their backs. Hasehnayer played here last night to a crowded house, and succeeded in thoroughly mystifying his audience. His receipts were so good that he intends returning here on;; Monday next. The Hawera Road Board held its usual monthly meeting ; but there was nothing of importance transacted. Town Board honors do not at present seem to be much sought after in Hawera. In addition to the three retiring members two have resigned. I trust the new Board will be composed of good business men who will do what work is before them without superfluous tongue wagging. Mr Flint, who has for the last ten months been in charge of the Bank of Now South Wales here, left yesterday for Wellington, at which branch he is appointed accountant. Mr Kempthorne, late

accountant in Wanganui, takes charge here, Stock at Mr Barker’s Normanby stock sale did not move off very briskly on Wednesday last. The fact is, there have been so many sales of late, together with the dry weather, which make the supply greater than the demand.
