The ice gorge of Nebraska river caused great destruction of property. The whole Platt Valley, from Columbus to Freemont, is under water. The Corillard exploring party at Mexico have exhumed a buried town on a line of central railroad, giving evidence of advanced civilisation. They found paved streets, regular stone steps, and carvings showing high order of workmanship. Edison's electric light system is now said to be complete. The Company have been granted permission to lay wires for the light in New York City. Beecher preached a discourse on the wide spread sympathy for murderers and criminals. Forster, son of a leading citizen in Los Angelos, California, was deliberately shot in the streets of that city by a young Spanish girl because he refused marriage as promised. Moody and Sankey have ceased their revival services in San Francisco, and declare themselves disappointed in results so far as the number converted is concerned. President Garfield has declared himself unalterably opposed to Morrnonisrn. It must be stamped out, and ho feels bound to do this because his predecessors saw fit to recognise the institution by the appointment of Brigham Young, the head of the Church, as Governor of the Territory. Sullivan, the associate of Parnell, and one of the traversers, is now in New York
addressing societies and stirring up subscriptions. Page, a British subject, employed by the Chinese at Hong Kong, killed a smuggler and was thanked by his employers. Subsequently the British authorities arrested and tried him for murder, but the jury acquitted him. It is now believed that throughout the whole Island of Chios, which contained 70.000 inhabitants, 7000 were killed by the recent earthquake ; 25 per cent, of the survivors were wounded. Only ten inhabitants of Chime were killed, and 30.000 people arc without shelter. Evictions are goingon largely in Ireland. In the County Tyrone more than 2,000 processes for ejectment wore served. It is said that the Nihilists have notified to the Czar that they will lay down their arms in return, among other things, for an amnesty for revolutionists. In the meantime more mines have been discovered near the Imperial palaces. The Grand Duke Nicholas Constantine Novilda, notorious in connection with the theft of diamonds, has been arrested for political intriguing in favour of his father, who is brother of the late Czar.
