TRIAL OF LOUTS,—PRISONER DISMISSED.

At the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court at Wanganui, before the Chief Justice, the Grand Jury returned a true bill against John Louis, for carnal knowledge of Ethel E. E. Pakenham, a girl under the age of 10 years. John Louis was indicted for the offence and pleaded not guilty. He was defended by Mr Barnicoat. The following constituted the jury : T. Cnlpau (foreman), W. T. Toylor, Michael Crawley, R. J. B. Gray, Matthew Bell, W. Parnell, Malcolm Crawford, J. Gellatly, H. Harris, W. C- Watkins, S. Austin, W. H. Wisdom. The offence was alleged to have been committed on the 17th September last at Carlyle, and the evidence was entirely unfit for publication, but went to show that the girl was notoriously untruthful. At an early stage of the case His Honor suggested that on that ground it was not desirable to proceed further with the evidence. Eleven jurymen expressed their willingness to acquit the prisoner but the twelvth was of an opposite opinion, and the case for the prosecution was therefore proceeded with. Ultimately the prisoner was found not guilty and discharged.
