HAWERA.

The Mail has over 90 subscribers between Manuiahi and Stratford. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Wednesday Evening. The Parihaka meeting was held last Sunday, but To Wlnti was as mysterious as usual—talked about peace hereafter, and that the light was coming, but said nothing of any importance. There was a fair attendance, several Europeans from Wanganui and Hawera being present. It is understood that arrangements are being made to get Mr Bradley up with his hounds to hunt about every fortnight during the next three months. A Jockey Club is also spoken of, the only difficulty being the want of a permanent course. Sir William Fox has kindly consented to give a lecture in aid of the funds of the Hawera Institute. Parihaka block still hangs fire, although it was reported on Saturday that most of the land had been taken up. A letter war is going on in the local paper between Sir William Fox and Messrs Middleton Bros, re the conducting of the licensed house at Opunaki. It seems that during the former’s recent visit several men were on the spree, much to the annoyance of his lady and himself. There is a good quantity of cayenne pepper in the letters.

Coach CQinmuuication by the coast has again been resumed, Mr Hall travelling from New Plymouth and Opunnki ; two conveyances, namely Prosser’s mail coach and Flynn’s express, travelling from Hawcra to Opunaki. Judge Lynch sat upon a pakeha-Maori the other day at Nonnanby, and decided that he should be tarred and feathered. It was done.
