On Wednesday Mr W. Cowern held hia usual sale of cattle, &c. Of the 200 yarded, most were sold under the hammer, the. balance being disposed of immediately afterwards. Not only was the attendance good, but the bidding was lively, and a decided improvement in prices noticeable. Good calves went at £2 2s 6d ; yearlings and upwards brought from £2 12s 6d to £2 17s 6d ; heifers £3 17s 6d ; store cows £3 15s to £4 ; cows with calves £4 7s 6d ; 1 pen of young bullocks realised £4l2s Gd; grown bullocks £5 ss. All presented were sold with satisfaction to buyers and sellers.

At the close of the sale, Mr Cowern made a statement to the effect that reports had been circulated relative to the disposal of the Kakaramea yards to Mr Freeman Jackson. Until about a fortnight ago nothing had transpired between himself and that gentleman. Now, however, finding that Mr Jackson had determined to set up in opposition, he had thought it advisable to part with his interest in the yards, although regretting the necessity for so doing, A personal friendship had always existed between Mr Jackson and himself, and he fully believed that the business could not have been committed into better hands. Although relinquishing the yards he had no intention whatever of giving up business in the district, and begged to observe at this his last sale in those yards that he hoped the public would accord to his successor the same support and kindness that he had always received.
