IRISH SPEECHES in the BRITISH PARLIAMENT.
On the 3rd March, in the House of Commons, Dillon defended his advice to the Irish to arm, adding that in the event of their disarmament they were resolved to establish equality and disarm the landlords also. Dillon said that if he were an Irish farmer, he would keep a rifle to shoot, landlords with. The remark was received with a general exclamation of “Oh ! ” Dillon further said he wished the Irish had proclaimed civil war. The Speaker called him to order. Sir W. Y. Harcourt declared that his former attacks were fully justified by Dillon’s language. He had uttered sentiments that would bring horror and disgust into the mind of every honest man. Sir William further said he was justified in saying the Land League depended for support on Fenian conspiracy. The Irish subscriptions were copper, while gold and silver came from America. Dillon had expressed the true spirit that animated the League.
