Wanganui Education Board.

The following items are gleaned from the Chronicle : At meeting of the Education Board on Wednesday, there were present Messrs Watt (chairman), Boss, Coutts, Sanson, McGregor, Not man, and Snelson. New BoAitJ).—The examination of the voting papers for the election of the new Board showed the following result: Watt, 41 ; Baker, 24 ; Bridge, lb ; Wilson, Id ; Halcombe, 12; McGregor, 12; Duigan, 11 ; Williams, G ; McWilliam, 2 ; Duncan, 2. Messrs Watt, Baker, and Bridge were declared elected. Mr AValt expressed his thanks to the Committees on behalf of Mr Baker and himself for having re-elected them. He would have been glad to have seen Mr McGregor re-elected, but he must say he was pleased with the selection made, and trusted they would get on as amicably with the new as with the old Board. WoonvjJ.J.E. —Application was received from Mr B. Willis for the mastership of Woodville school. Mr Coutts said Mr Willis had already opened a temporary] school. The appointment was continued. Letter from the Committee was read, stating that tenders had been accepted for the erection of a school, and asking for £4O for school requisites, when it was resolved that £lO be given to the school, and that a tank be supplied ; the school requisites to be forwarded.

Carlyle. —Letter from Chairman of Committee enclosing Mr Dyer’s (the head master) resignation, and recommending the Boaid to accept it. It was resolved that Mr Dyer’s resignation be accepted, and that the Board express its appreciation of his services. An application from Mr Williamson for the vacancy thus occasioned was received, and he was appointed ; arrangements to be made for the transfer as soon as possible. It was proposed by Mr Notman, That Mr Hill be temporarily appointed to Carlyle. Whaka.mara.— The Inspector said that this school was in charge of Mrs Bremer, who was a most suitable teacher. When she resigned some short time ago, a young lady had applied for the position, but on examination she was found unsuitable, and Mrs Bremer resumed the position. The. appointment was confirmed, and £5 was voted towards the flooring of the room in consideration of rent not being charged.

Hawera. —Letter applying for a platform for the female teachers’ room, and the sum of £2O for the lining of the new room. The desks at present in use, which would be superseded by the platform, would be of use in furnishing the new school. The platform was very necessary, as on a horizontal floor the children in the infant-room could not be under the supervision of the teachers. The Secretary was instructed to tell the Committee to call for tenders for the erection of the platform, the lining, and one glass door. Application for another pupil teacher was referred to the Inspector.

Post-office Savings Bank. —Letter from the Education Department, enclosing IG4 notices and cards, with reference to the proposed penny stamp savings bank for the encouragement of thrift amongst the children. Scholarships’ Regulations. —The In' spector said that the increase in the attendance would warrant the Board in giving nine scholarships in this j-ear instead of five as last year. They would be divided as follows :—Class A : Four scholarships at £3O each—£l2o. Class B t Three scholarships at £25 each—£7s. Class C : Two scholarships £2O each —£40. Total £235. Scholarships would not be awarded to competitors unless they have obtained at least 25 per cent, of the marks allotted in each standard subject and in each of any three of the four extra subjects, not more than three extra subjects to be taken, and 50 per cent, of the total marks obtainable. In Clause VII of the regulations the words “ and II” were to be omitted. The regulations thus revised were ordered to be printed and forwarded to the head office of the Department for approval. Biule-beading in Schools.—Application from the Committee of the Marton school requesting permission to use the school for Bible instruction after school hours. —Resolved, That the Committee be informed that the school buildings are in the hands of the Committee, and the Board will not interfere as long as they are used in accordance with the Board’s regulations.
