MORMONS AND MAORIS.

Five Mormon elders have visited the Maori settlement at Orakei, near Auckland, where the Native Parliament is being held, and held a meeting, which was largely attended. The principal speaker said he bail only arrived some two weeks ago from America, that he had heard of the great Maori prophet Te Whiti, and that he bad a letter for him, which he asked the local chief to have forwarded. Paora Tuhaere (the chief), however, declined moving in the matter till he had consulted Tawhaio, the Native King. The Mormon elder then went on to say he believed in the prophets and the apostles being now on earth the same as in the time of our Saviour. He said : Te Whiti is yoni’s, and Europeans have several, to each of whom the Lord sends his words by vision.” Ho then distributed several tracts. The chief, in reply, said that they had already so many religions they scarcely know which one rightly to believe, but did not think the right one was Mormonism, The Mormon elder responded : “ There is only one true religion —that of the Latter Day Saints.” The elder left soon after, some amusement having been caused by several Europeans who were present, offering to join their persuasion if allowed six wives each.
