PATEA COUNTY MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. TUESDAY, MARCH 22, 1881.

SHOPPING. C(uid houses and good furniture arc a luxury which most new settlors desire, if they could only indulge in that direction. But (ho beginning is a time of struggle and close-shaving. New' districts have to pass through a rough-and-ready stage before they reach a period of well-to-do-ncss; hut there comes a time, which seems near at hand in this district, when settlers who have prospered on their land, and traders who have blossomed into merchants, begin to realise the make-shift shabbiness of their surroundings. Houses which served to cover them in the rough early days are seen to be mere sheds. Furniture which was dear and ricketty to begin with has become unfit for exhibition to guests and friends. Substantial houses, which look as il a man were “founding a family,” arc beginning to dot the country. When these increase, our tradesmen will find an increasing market for merchandise of a superior class—not exactly articles des luxes, which lead to foppery and snobbishness, but things that make a house homely and attractive. We arc all interested in having what ladies call good shopping. It is not desirable to have to send out of the district for a necessary article when you want it of the best. (Shopping is improving considerably in Patea, and there is a tendency to keep a better selection of articles in each class of business. This will keep money in the district, and help to buiild up a good commercial centre.
