North Canterbury settlers are intending to petition Parliament for repeal of tax on shepherds’ dogs. It is stated that a position in the Union Bank at Christchurch has been offered to Spofforlh, the Australian bowler, and that Paramor, the Dunedin cricketer, is about to settle in Christchurch.
A north Otago contemporary says though in some parts there have been light yields of grain, the average has been fair, and the district has sustained its reputation for heavy yields. On the Elderslie estate one of the tenants has just finished 120 acres of velvet wheat, the result being IGSB sacks. This is equal to about GO bushels to the acre.
The Rev. Mr Keating, Episcopalian clergyman lately appointed to the Manawatu district, is reported by the local paper to have started an evening class to remedy to sonic extent the evil rising from the lamentable ignorance of some of those unfortunate youths who, most likely through no fault of their own, have in their childhood received little or no education at all. Mr Keating is endeavoring to enlist others into the service.
The Nnscby Chronicle understands that waggons arc now engaged by Xaseby tradesmen to go direct to Dunedin for goods, instead of toPahnerson, as hitherto. The railway charge is so high that it is found to be cheaper, by at least os per ton, to import directly from the market by waggon, instead of making use of the train.
