It apijears that a person got abusive in the hotel, and was in consequence turned out, and to revenge himself he went to the Sergeant of Police and informed him that Mr Owen was selling liquor after hoursMr Owen stated he knew nothing about the matter, as he was away at Nelson, being ill at the time. The police said the bouse had always been well conducted Dismissed with a caution.

A public meeting’ of those interested in the continuance of the Institute was held on Wednesday afternoon, Mr White being in the chair. After some considerable discussion it Avas proposed by Mr Morccvoft, seconded by Mr Bate, That the present committee continue in office until the next general meeting, and that for the future the annual subscription to the Library be 10s, payable in advance ; to the Heading Room 10s per annum, payable quarterly in advance ; and that tickets of membership, not transferable, bo printed and issued to subscribers. Carried. I am glad to be able to record that Mr Finncrty has so far recovered from his accident as to bo able to go to Pater this morning.
