Mr Gladstone announced in the House of Commons last night that the Government proposed to bring the debate in Committee on the Irish Coercion Bill to a close on Monday next. The announcement was not well received by the Irish members, a number of whom protested against consideration of the
measure being curtailed. ESCAPEES from NEW CALEDONIA. Brisbane, 21st. Five escapees from New Caledonia have landed on Stradbrooke Island, Moreton Bay, in a nude state and nearly starving. Their immediate arrest lias been ordered by the authorities. WOOL SALES. London, 21st. At wool sale to-day, 7.900 bales were catalogued, and the tone was quiet. GREEK WAR PREPARATIONS. Athens, 21st. Notwithstanding a more moderate lone of feeling in Greece in regard to the frontier question, the Greek Government continues active preparations for war; and as further augmentation of available forces, the reserves are being prepared for service. Constantinople, 21st. Ambassadors of the Powers are now in conference here, to effect a pacific settlement.
