Australian Cricketers.
NELSON. The Australian Eleven arrived at Nelson Wednesday afternoon, after a long rough passage of 17 hours. The weather was threatening, but the ground proved to be in good order. The Nelson team’s first innings closed for 83, The highest score being Fowler 30, Halliday 14. The Australians in their first innings made 72, being 11 behind the Nelson team. WANGANUI. The Twenty-two will bo represented as under : Patea. —Farrington, Riddiford, Beresford, Miller, F. Bayly, Jacomb, Read, and Coutts. Wanganui. —Cross, Barton, Lacey, McGregor, Heenan, Notman, Saunders,Whitford. Rangitihei. —J. G. Wilson, J. C. Fulton. Manawalu. —Robinson, Sherwill, and Samson. Messrs Simcox of Otaki, and Walker of Palmerston could not attend. In selecting the twenty-two the Committee have been actuated with the desire of obtaining good all round men, every department of the game being represented by one or more members who have shown special ability in a particular line, and it may safely be taken for granted that a very strong 22 has been got together. In the bowling department, there are Robinson, F.Bayly, Farrington, Cross, Fulton, Riddiford, Coutts, Samson, McGregor, all good men. As a long-stop, J. G. Wilson, of Bulls, cannot well be beaten, whilst Bercsford and Jacomb can both keep the wickets. In out fielding the team should be strong, as all the men arc reliable “catches,” while close to the wickets Saunders, Samson, G. Bayly, Heenan, and Whitford are very smart. All the team have some pretentions to batting, fully half of them being well above the average. The pitch is in very good order, and should be all in favour of the batsmen.
