WAVERLEY.

The Mail has over 80 subscribers between WhenuaJcura and Waitotara. BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday Evening. PuiiLic Meeting —A meeting was held in the New Town Hall on Thursday evening to consider the steps which ought to be taken to mark the opening of the Railway as a red letter day in Waverley. The chair was occupied by Mr G-. S. Bridge who made a few remarks on the advisability of having a public demonstration, and requested others who were present to state their opinions as to the form it should take. After some talk it was considered advisable that it should take the form of a public dinner, and the following committee was elected to carry out the object, viz: Messrs G. S. Bridge, A. Howie junr., J. Aiken, G. Newland, W. Brewer* and G. H. Norman. As the committee: must be considered as representing the' district, there can be no doubt as to the success of the affair, for as in everything else the issue of any public movement depends upon the men who have it in hand.. With good men to manage, and a public demonstration on the opening of the railway to our doors as the object in view, we may naturally expect that Waverley, which comes so well to the front in other public matters, will not be behind on this occasion. From what could be gathered, the opening is to take place about the Ist of March, so that the committee have sufficient time to perfect their arrangements. Good Templars. —The usual fortnightly meeting of the 1.0. G.T. Lodge was held yesterday evening, in the old Town Hall. There was a fair attendance and a pleasant

evening was spent, after tiie initiation of officers f'o r tin's quarter. Town Hoard. —On Thursday at noon Mr W. Macfarlane was duly elected member of this Board to fill the vacancy by the resignation of Mr Mmdb McLean. The whole proceedings showed but a slack interest in Town Board affairs. Nomination.-— Mr Geo. S. Bridge, lias been nominated as a candidate for the Wanganui Education Board. ♦ - - ■ ■
