RAILWAY DEMONSTRATION AT WAVERLEY.
Some prominent settlers in Waverley and district are of opinion that a demonstration should be made on the occasion of the opening of the extension of railway line from Waitotara to Waverley. This is as it should be, we shall be pleased to record hearty response has been made by the - general public to the invitation notified in our present issue. The convenience and comfort of railway travelling has already been experienced byPatea settlers in occasional trips Waitotara to Wanganni 7 and witK tte completion of tlae line to Waverley more will avail themselves of the railway line both for pleasure and profit. Two years ago few thought that the year 1881 would see railway station buildings at Waverley, Yet there they are. Less than two years should see a further extension from Waverley to Patea, with a corresponding increase of advantage to both places and to the revenue from railway receipts. The longer lengths of railway opened have proved to be the best paying lines. It is manifestly therefore to the advantage of all settlers on this coast that the through line should be pushed on to completion with the New Plymouth section. A demonstration such as that now proposed by Waverley, can be made useful by settlers in pointing the special advantages to the town and district which railway conveniences afford, by contrasting former charges with railway tariff, and enumerating the many agricultural products, formerly wasted, but which ready and cheap transit will enable to be marketed and turned into cash. Patea should be found in hearty accord with Waverley in the proposed railway demonstration, and the occasion should be made the most of to bring under the notice of OovernmenfTthe profitableness of rapidly pushing on the work northwards.
