WELLINGTON RACES.

The above race meeting commenced on Thursday, the weather being all that could be desired. Fewer persons were, however, present than expected, probably on account of the higher entrance charges. No gambling was allowed on the course. There were only 1,400 people on the grounds. The gate-keeper having paid over £4OO looks blue over it. There was no spirit in the matter —nothing like the old English games. The stewards looked like a lot of parsons. Several small-fry gamblers were arrested by the police. Their case is now under consideration—the question at issue being whether the race course is a public or private place. Our late Governor Robinson’s horse, Lady Emma, was scratched, as Williams, her jockey, broke his collar bone when riding Miss Domett in the Maiden Plate. Randwick’s jockey also sustained injury. The following were winners of chief events : Maiden Plate, of 50 sovs. One mile and a half. The Governor 1 Badsworth 2 Hurdle Race, of 50 sovs. About two miles and half. Clarence 1 Agent 2 Wellington Cup, of 400 sov. Two miles. Natator 1 Libeller 2 Dan 3 The race was run in 3 min. 38 secs. Flying Stakes Handicap, of 50 sovs. Three-quarters of a mile. Luna 1 Dan 2 The Governor 3 Friday’s races were worse than on Thursday, and only about 800 people were present. The stoppage of the games smothered what little enjoyment there was. The stewards deserve to be censured for inefficiency. Hntt Park Stakes of 75 sovs ; miles. Randwick x Luna 2 Mischief 3 Billingsgate, Miss Domett, The Governor Dan, and Sir George were scratched. Hurdle Handicap, of 75 sovs ; about 2£ miles. Clarence 1 Grey Momus 2 Agent 3
