WAVERLEY.
The Mail has over 80 subscribers between Whenuahura and Waitotara, BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL, Friday Evening. Wairoa Highway Board. —At last meeting Mr Fisher of Waitotara was elected chairman, and there can be no question as to the wisdom of the selection or the fitness of that gentleman for the post. The former chairman, Mr Bridge, was an enthusiast in the carrying on of the work of the Board as to correspondence and details. Every man cannot spare the time requisite for properly cairying on the duties of chairman and clerk, and it would be wise for the Board to appoint a clerk forthwith. In nine cases out of ten the saving of a clerk’s salary is wasting the ratepayer’s money in another way. Duties may be neglected or correspondence overlooked, and confusion set in, while no one can be blamed, as it is difficult to blame a man for neglect who holds the position as a favour conferred and whose neglect of duty is an oversight. The Town Board of Waverley would do well to appoint a clerk as the present style of conducting business is rather loose. In case however of such appointment being made the time for meeting would require to bo more punctaal or the clerk would not be likely to wait an hour or so till a quorum had been hunted up. With a clerk the ratepajmrs could have a peep behind the scenes, and the honest workers would be known and the drones exposed.
School Committees. —The election of school committees takes place next Monday evening. The time of the year is not well suited for the out-lying districts as people will be busy with their harvest. In most cases howevei\parents will make it a duty to attend. While a committee has very little power still it is well that their duties are discharged by men of a courteous and manly disposition.
