HAWERA.

BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , Friday Evening. The return cricket match between Waihi and the second eleven of the Hawera Club was resumed last Wednesday, but owing to the inclemency of the weather it was concluded. Waihi got 63 in their first innings, and Hawera with the loss of six wickets put together 107, when the rain came with such persistency that the players had to give up for the day. Mason for Hawera made 35 not out, and Miller for Waihi 24. Hawera has been pretty lively during the last two days, owing to some land transactions on the Patea River. It reminds one of the old times to see so many Maoris about town. They were to have been paid yesterday, but as some were showing signs of having tried over-much to quench their thirsts, it was decided to postpone payment until this morning. Colonel Whitmore has been paying his old haunts a visit during the last few days, and this morning he went by coach with Colonel Roberts to Opunaki. Sir William Fox arrived yesterday, and is to-day on the Plains inspecting i - eserves, &c. There are great inquiries about the successful tenderer for the railway formation between here and Normanby. Surely the Government can decide a petty contract like this without waiting a month. It is unfair to the contractors by keeping them in suspense with no apparent object. Carpenters in Hawera are being pretty well employed, and plenty more work is coming out. The houses on the Plains, although not large at present, are increasing fast in number, and Manaia in a month or two will show quite a lively scene.
