RECEIVED LAST NIGHT. DUE NORTH. Wellington, Wednesday. It is reported on good authority that George North has left for London by way of ’Frisco with the L'4ooo sweep and other money. His creditors have declared him bankrupt, and one of them proposed at the meeting that the course for creditors to pursue was adieu North. ESCAPE FROM GAOL. New Plymouth, Wednesday. A prisoner recently committed for horse stealing at Patea attempted to escape from gaol. A mounted constable noticed him running away, and pursued, but the prisoner refused to surrender until covered with a revolver, when he threw up his hands. SUBSIDY FOR RAILWAY. Wellington, Wednesday. The West Coast Railway from Wellington to Fostou is claiming a share of interes lately. The sleepy Wellingtonians are arousing to a sense of their duty in thi matter. The Government have objected to give grants of land as subsidj' along the line, and the people are demanding them. REVENUE FROM WAIMATE PLAINS. Wellington, Wednesday. The sale of the Waimate Plains is de pended on to pull up the revenue to the amount anticipated for this year, without which there would be a serious falling off. MAJOR ATKINSON. Wellington, Wednesday. The Colonial Treasurer left by the Hawea for Lyttelton this afternoon, and will be absent for two weeks. What is he after over there ?
