MARKETS.
MELBOURNE WOOL PRICES. Under date Melbourne, December 22nd, the New Zealand L. and M. A. Company report : Wool. —The operations in this market since the date of our last report, the 25th November, have been characterised by a healthy activity. Large and varied catalogues have been submitted and have met with brisk competition, resulting in the placing of about 37,122 bales at prices fairly sustaining those current when we last advised. Inferior descriptions, however, have shown a weakness, and this has been particularly noticeable in coarse cross-bred, which, in sympathy with the decline reported at Home, has suffered considerably. The attendance of buyers, comprising English, Scotch, Continental, and American baa been large, and the business on the different accounts good. The Americans, however, at the early part of the season operated sparingly, but lately their influence has been more felt, and has no doubt helped to preserve the rates at the level we have indicated. The clip, taken as a whole, is superior to that of last year, the hitherto good supply of grass and water having been the means of making the fleeces generally heavier and sounder, while the greater care that has been exercised in skirting and preparing the wool for the market has done much to raise the standard of price of the parcels offered.
