oeen. The unfortunate man who so strongly resembles Sullivan, the murderer, that he has been hunted from town to town, and province to province, is now in Auckland. The electric light burns brightly under water. During the past year the German army used it successfully for submarine operations. Mr Tennyson’s new pla}' is a tragedy in two acts, of which Mr Irving assumes the heroic role, and Miss Ellen Terry that of the heroine. Lord Brougham once when he was in a facetious mood, being asked to define a lawyer, said ; “ A lawyer is a learned gentleman who rescues your estate from your enemies and keeps it himself.” Suicide. —On Christmas Day the Hon. H. B. Beor, who was a passenger from Sydney by the Botorua, committed suicide by shooting himself. He is supposed to belong to the Upper House of Parliament of Queensland. He was buried at sea.
