The usual annual sports came off on the Cricket Ground, on Satnrday last, and resulted in one of the best meetings held in Hawera. The weather was all that could be wished, and tempted about 1,000 persons on the ground to witness the contests, the ladies especially being conspicuous by their numbers. The arrangements of the committee were excellent. The ladies from the pavilion had a good view of the events throughout. Captain Lukis acted as judge, and Mr S. Adamson as starter, and gave general satisfaction. The racing was remarkable for close finishes, no less than three dead heats being given, and one of these the two-mile walking, Vaughan and Hodge tieing. There was intense excitement over this race, and it was with difficulty the committee kept the crowd from off the course. The handicapping, with the exception of Waite in the mile, was really first-class, and reflects great credit on the committee, who consisted of Messrs D. McL’Dowie, S. Adamson, G. Y. Bate, C. W. Broadbent, J. Cunningham, J. L. Flint, F. W. Lukis, and T, Woolner. Mr Cunningham, as secretary, could not be equalled. Mr Owen dispensed refreshments at the booth, and was well patronised.
