PATEA COUNTY MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1880. RAISING CAPITAL.
The nominal capital of the Panama Canal Company, a French project, is equal to £13,500,000 English money. The total estimates on which contracts have been accepted for cutting the canal amount to over twenty-two millions sterling. The Company’s subscribed capital, therefore, will be not quite twothirds of the required amount. The balance will be made up, we suppose, by the market value of land conceded to the company by the Republic of Colombia as as inducement for taking the canal by the Panama route; and upon this land the company will be able, as the work proceeds, to raise money by way of secured loan, or by debenture shares secured on the entire property.
