WAVERLEY.
BRANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL , W( dnesday Evening Christmas passed here with few signs of outward rejoicing, and only a lew indications of that boisterous joy which brings repentance. The post-office was the only building decorated with evergreens, and in this the postmaster shewed Ins appreciation of what is neat and tasteful. Boxing Day.—Thu Cavalry had a competition for prizes which had been proson led by’ friends. The principal prizes were a carbine presented by MrD. Ballam, of tho Commercial Hotel, won by Mr Duncan McLean with a score of 53 ; also a bullock given hyMrT. Watson, won by J. W. Thurston ; an excellent bridle, t lie gift of Mr Thus. Read, saddler, won by Mr A. Howie. Other prizes of losses value, down to a feeding bottle forliie unfortunate lowest scorer, were presented ; but from the stormy nature of the day. it may bo said with all justice, that no one had a chance of doing his level best. With a calm day, if ever we arc to have one again, and with a better style of handicapping the members of the troop would probably find themselves differently placed on tho list of comparative merit.
