RECEIVED THIS DAY. {Renter's Despatches to the Mai..) GRAIN PANIC New York, 22nd. A panic has taken place at Chicago owing to the numerous grain failures. The price of wheat is falling. CHEATING THE CUSTOMS. Melbourne, Thursday. The firm of Melbourne merchants (agents for Clayton and Shuttleworth’s agricultural implements) against whom proceedings were taken for passing false invoices, have paid the fine of £ 1,000 to the Customs. COLONIAL MARKETS. Melbourne, Thursday. New Zealand oats, 3s 6d; stocks small. The sugar market is excited owing to advices from London and Paris that the beet root crop is small ; rates are ruling 25s per ton higher. FRESH MEAT EXPORT. Aden, 22nd The ss Frotos, with a cargo of fresh meat, has arrived here from Melbourne, en route for London. Everything so far has been satisfactory. The moat is in sound condition, and the refrigerating machinery worked well. AWARDS FOR BEER. Melbourne, 23rd The awards for beers at the Exhibition have been published. The awards announced by telegram on the 12lh inst. are correct, but the following additions are now known;— For porter in bulk, Ehrenfried second ; for bottled ales, Crowe (Christchurch), Ehrenfried, and S track an take third. For brown ales, Manning first: Hargan (Dunedin;, Thomson (Oamaru), and MacTaggart (Palmerston) seconds ; Cochrane (Dunedin) third.
