LOHDON WOOL, TALLOW, &c. London, 4tb Nov. Wool..—During the interval between ales there has been more enquiry for crossbred wool, and it is probable there will be a rise in value of that description at the approaching sales, especially for the tinei sorts. For other wools the market continues in a quiescent state. Later advices hardly bear out the estimate made in our last of an increase of 100,000 bales in Australian wool next year, the season in Australia generally not having been altogether favorable ; on the other band, Now Zealand appears to be certain to send us a large per ccntage of increase. Tallow, —The supply of Russian being nominal, and home melt being deficient both in quality and quantity, this market has at last shown some signs of activity, and a rise of Is to 2s per cwt took place at last week’s sale. The rise was most marked in the best Sydney beef Tallow, which, it is understood, is being purchased for export to the Continent, where it will be used in the manufacture of buttcrinc or margarine. Mutton tallow is not useful for this purpose, neither is inferior beef, but still the market for all tallow should be favorably affected by the withdrawal of the good beef parcels for edible purposes. On the other hand, no one can tell the extent of the stock of North American tallow which would be attracted here at anything over 37s per cwt. Present quotations are 37s tor best mutton, and 35s for good ordinary beef, but best beef of “ edible ” quality has sold at 38s 9d. Hides and Leathers.— There was a firm market for Hides at (he large sale of 7th October, all the 12,000 then offered being at full prices, but at the subsequent sale of 28th October, when about 11,000 were catalogued, not half were sold, and a decline of id to J-d per lb from the highest point has consequently to be chronicled. Wheat has declined Is to 2s per quarter from the highest point, but Australian and New Zealand qualities being still wanted the quotations for them are not much altered, say 49s to 51s Gd for Australian and 40s to 52s for New Zealand, both for 49G lbs ex store. Oats.—New' Zealand (4Glbsper bushel) arc now quoted 28s to 32s per 3GBlbs ex store. Mr F. R. Jackson’s Fortnightly Stock Report. Wednesday, December 10. The bidding at the sale to-day was not so good as on former occasions, but I succeeded in placing all the cattle, at or after the auction, at slightly reduced figures. The bulk of the cattle offered were of good average class, the larger store bullocks being of better quality. Beet was only medium, the bulk being old cows,
not very saleable sorts at tliia season of the year ; consequently some of the pens went to the graziers. I quote best beef at 17s 6cl the 1001b, and medium 16s. Sheep were in short supply, sellers expecting high rates. The large demand for stores has a tendency to raise prices, and any coming forward now meet a capital market, at extreme values. The properties offered failed to find purchasers at the auction, but I expect to place some of them privately in the course of the week. Horses were of the usual class ) but I sold more than generally. Pigs were in demand at very full rates. Fat lambs sold well at capital prices.
