DEATH BY LAUDANUM.
Mr Charles Hurrell, a clerk in the Magistrate’s Court, at Ashburton, killed himself at Christchurch, by an over-dose of laudanum on the Ith December. The deceased formerly held a commission in the Waikato Militia, and was subsequently a member of the Armed Constabulary at Patea. He Avas a married man. and his wife has left on a visit to Auckland about a month ago. He went to Coker’s Hotel, Christchurch, on the 2nd December, land complained that he Avas suffering from neuralgia, and could not sleep. He Avas last seen at dinner on Friday night, and about noon on Sunday last, was discovered dead in his bed, A bottle of laudanum, three-parts empty, Avas standing on his dressing-table, while a full bottle was found in his overcoat pocket. He told the proprietor of the hotel that he had sent in his resignation through some local dispute, but was sorry he had done so. Mr C Hurrell was a son-in-law of Mr and ilrs B Vcrcoe, of Henderson’s Mill, Auckland, having married the Avidow of the late Dr. Spence, ofPateaand Taranaki. The widow at present is on a visit to her father and mother, and lias one son eight years old. —Tar. Herald.
