When the Egyptians wished to get out immense shafts of granite, they bored holes in the pavement rock, forced dry sticks into them, and then soaked the wood with water. The force thus broke th« rock. Telephone Concert. —A curious telephonic experiment has been made in Switzerland on the occasion of the federal fete of singers. A telephone bad been placed in the Zurich Festlialle, and two conductors connected with the Bale telegraphic office, where a large audience bad congregated. The distance from Bale to Zurich is about 80 kilometercs. The Bale audience enjoyed tho singing as well as if they bad been placed in the upper circle of an ordinary opera bouse. At the end of the performance they proved their satisfaction by clapping their hands, which the telegraph wires transmitted with perfect fidelity to the Zurich performers.
