On Saturday night, after the elephants belonging to Cole’s circus at Wellington had been got on board the AVakatipu, one of the gigantic animals became infuriated with a seaman who was walking past him, and seizing the unfortunate man with his trunk gave him a severe squeeze, and then threw him down on the ground. Beyond a few bruises and a fright he escaped uninjured. The Natal Witness states that a gentleman, who passed over the fatal field of Isandhlwana lately, informs us that, except in the immediate vicinity of the camp, all the dead bodies still lie exposed, being covered only by a few tufts of grass or loose soil. He describes the field as a most horrible sight, bones lying about in all directions, and articles of clothing sticking out of the ground.
