AMATEUR DR AMA TIC PERFORM A NCE. mHE PATEA GARRICK CLUB will give a Dramatic Entertainment, in the Town Hall, NEXT THURSDAY, this being their first appearance as a Club. The proceeds will be devoted to a Wardrobe Fund, to enable the Club to present future plays with suitable costumes and stage appointments. Through the kind co-operation of local musicians, an ORCHESTRAL BAND of eight members will perform Selections of Music as interludes. The programme will comprise three dramatic pieces:— The famous high Comedy, “COOL AS A CUCUMBER,” FIVE CHARACTERS. Plumper, a cool intruder, afflicted with a constitutional, almost morbid shyness, but is determined to shake it off. Old Barkins, of the old-port school, crusty and respectable, with matrimonial views for his son. Frederick Barkins, returned from travel, and determined to marry the lady who hasn’t a penny. Miss Jessy Honiton, sweet but not rich. Wiggins, invaluable servant whose wages ought to be raised. New original Farce, specially written for the Club, entitled “Necessity the Mother of Invention,” FIVE CHARACTERS. Necessity and the Mother of Invention are in partnership as bubble company sharebrokers, under the style of Brown , and Robinson. Verdant Smith, Esq., wants to invest £IO,OOO in Spanish bonds. Nab’em and Grab’em, detectives (on reduced pay), both sharp fellows, “go for ” Brown and Robinson, but collar Smith to make sure of the reward. Costumes of the 20th Century. To conclude with Dickens’s Burlesque (adapted) “808 SAWYER’S PARTY,” EIGHT CHARACTERS. Bob Sawyer, a hospital sawbones, with quiet lodgings at Mrs Raddle’s, and in difficulties as to rent, but a splendid fellow for giving parties. Ben Allen, a boon companion, also in the hospital mangling line. Jack Hopkins, another of ’em, but a model medical student, Mr Pickwick, the immortal original, a welcome guest at Mr Sawyer’s. Mr Noddy, out for a spree. Mr Gunter, in for a wetting. Mrs Raddle, a landlady with a temper, and a nightcap. Lodging-house Servant, a real blossom. Costumes, London fifty years ago.
