SPECIAL TELEGRAMS

RECEIVED LAST NIGHT. Tuhi’s Trial and Defence. Wellington, Wedncsay. Tuhi’s trial commences next Monday. His friends have secured Mr Norwood as counsel, and now he shows no desire to pass into the realm of darkness. His plea is “ Not Guilty.” He has bragged in gaol that he would be back to Taranaki by Christmas. There is more political significance now being attached to his crime. Wild reports say it had fallen to his lot to do the deed, through instructions from the Hau-hau chiefs. TUHI AND PARIHAKA. New Plymouth, Wednesday. From private information, the Taranaki Herald learns that at Parihaka the natives look on the Opuuaki murder as the work of a dastard. They talk over it far more than if it was a man who had been the victim. They say it is the work of a pouonga kino (a bad or vile slave). Tuhiata, it is thought, was not a frequent attendant at Parihaka* The natives arc strongly impressed with the notion that Tuhiata must have been drinking previous to committing the act. A native named Patea was found drowned this morning in a small tributary to the Waiwakiho river. Deceased was a very old man and one of the prisoners recently liberated at Dunedin. NEW TOWNSHIP AT ROTORUA. Wellington, Wednesay. The Government have succeeded in arranging for the survey of a township nt Lake Rotorua. EMIGRANTS IN DISTRESS* Wellington, Wednesday. The labouring men who left here for Sydney in search of employment have not been successful. Many have written to the Wellington Benevolent Institution stating- their distress.
