BUGGY ACCIDENT LAST NIGHT.

An alarming upset happened last nigh I on the Whennakura hill, Waverley side. Mr Anderson, traveller for Dnthic & Co., of Wellington, was driving to Waverley in a one-horse buggy, and having crossed the bridge in Wheuuaknra valley, he was rising the hill when he met the late Patea coach in descent. The road is winding, narrow, and in parts dangerous, the turns being sharp; and the declivity very steep. It is an awkward place for two conveyances to pass in daylight, and very dangerous in darkness because of the risk that horses may take fright at sudden lights flashing round a bend. The buggy horse, rather restive, swerved at sight of the coach lamps, and the buggy and horse slighthered down the slope, turning over in such a way that the machine lodged partly on a gorse hedge a few yards down the slope. Mr Anderson fell under the buggy, which did not crush him because the friendly hedge kept the thing partly up, leaving space beneath. If it had fallen smash on him when hurled down, which it seemed to do as viewed from the coach, he could hardly have escaped alive. Those in the coach got down and dragged the buggy out, releasing Mr Anderson from his soft grave under the hedge. Ho seemed little worse after recovering from the awkward tumble, and he was able to go on to Waverley.
