Mr Courtney reports respecting llic cattle saic at Glenavon on Thursday, as follows : —There were 83 head yarded, all of which were of fair quality, and the prices for young things was quite an advance on last sales, but big steers wore withdrawn, being held for £5 ss. No good springers were yarded, though there is a slight change in favour of cows near calving. I sold b small fairly-reared calves at 37s each ; 10 very small ones, wanting milk, 31s each ; 8 fair yearlings, £2 10s to £3 ; 8 18-month-old steers £3 10s ; 13 store cows, £4 2s Gd to £4 10s ; 1 springer, £6 ; 2 very old cows, calves at foot, £4 2s 6d ; 2 3•year-old steers, £G : 1 very small fat cow, £5 ; 1 pair heavy bullocks, £l9. ’ A new volume of poens by Mr Longfellow, entitled “Ultima Thule,” is announced for immediate publication. Until 1824 it was a punishable offence for anyone to shear a sheep within five miles of the British sea coast, the law also forbidding the exportation of wool. Mr John Bright is sitting to Mr Oulcss for another portrait, to be presented to the Manchester Reform Club by some friends of that institution. Thief, before the severe judge: “ What a disgrace ! Arc yon not ashamed, an old man like you to be brought here accused of theft ?”—“ Pardon me your Honor ; do not upbraid me undeservedly. I began stealing when I was very young.” The late Rev George Gilfillan left behind him a novel in MS. under the title of “ Reconciliation.” It is said that the name of the hero of the story is Balfour, and that the narrative partakes very largely of an autobiographical character, containing graphic sketches of the district of Porthshir, in which Mr Gilfillan was born. A reward of £I,OOO, is offered for the restoration of a pocket-book left accidentally by M. Louis Page, of Paris, in a private room on the Great Northern Railway of France. The securities in the pocket-book are worth upwards of £40,000. No tidings have yet been received of the missing property. An English traveller who has recently left Constantinople writes to the Daily News —“ The Bulgarians burned a Turk alive in his garden, near Rutschuk, the day I went through. There is no doubt about the facts whatever. Thcmotive was greed. Ho had, or was supposed to have, money.” An English sister writes to one of the English papers that she has generally found that from one to throe months of good hard work cures sentimental girls who take up nursing as a fancy.
