Quitting Afghanistan. —Tho secret of the Afghan policy of the Liberal Government is now out. At a grand Durbar of Native Princes held at Lahore, tho Mar quis of Ripon announced that the Government of the Empire had determined to follow the policy' of Lord Lawrence, the greatest of Indian statesmen, which was a policy of non-intervention in Afghanistan. The Government of Mr Gladstone then which has already shown what one of its supporters has termed the “ heroic cour age ”of abandoning North Afghanistan, are about to make a similar display of that great virtue in the South. Candahar we may conclude from this, is not to be held permanently.
