WELLINGTON COMMERCIAL. (From ~S.7i.Mail.) Business has improved sinccour last report, country orders coming in freely, but there is no material alteration in values. A trial ship, ment has been made of about 30 tons Fiji sugars of various descriptions. By late advices from the Mauritius sugars are active, and higher rates arc looked for; there is however, no change in the quotation of refined descriptions ; locally prices arc cut very fine. Crushed loaf sugar is scarce, and worth 50s per cwt. There is very little doing in Mauritius descriptions. Colonial malt is quotable at 6s toCs 3d. Hops, some very fine samples of foreign arc now in the market and 2s 4d to 2s 6d is asked, but to lead to business we think a concession will have to be made There is no improvement in u-ines and spirits. the former being very dull of sale ; the latter has more attention, brandies, other than Hennessy’s, finding a little business at from 7s upwards ; the high price of Hennessy’s drives purchasers to other brands ; whiskey continues in fair demand from 5s upwards, according to brands ; case from 17 s. Gd. Tea: Our market is now fully supplied for this season ; buyers arc not operating freely ; low lines in half-chests and boxes arc enquired for
CANTERBURY STOCK. (Latest Report.) There was a fair attendance of the trade at the Addington Yards on Wednesday, when 6609 sheep, 412 cattle, and 68 pigs constituted the supply for the day. Bidding generally was brisk at the opening of the sale, but afterwards fell off a little. SIIEEP. —Good and prime quality fat sheep were in small supply as compared with previous sales, and the bidding was accordingly better. Prime cross-breds in the wool realised 16s ; good do, 14s to 15s ; shorn cross-breds, prime, 13s 3d ; good do, 10s 6d to 11s 3d ; medium, 9s. We quote mutton 3d per lb in the wool, shorn, 2d No merinos worth quoting were offered. Lambs sold up to 8s 6d. Mixed shorn stores sold for 6s 6d ; cross-bred ewes in the wool, with lambs at foot, realised 12s 6d ; merino do, 9s 9d. Cattle.— There was a large supply of good and prime beef, no inferior being offered. Bidding was nevertheless, dull throughout, and prices accordingly declined. We quote the average for beef at 18s 6d per lOOlbs. Stores were in small supply, and were sold at slightly advanced rates. Milch cows were cleared out at up to £7 15s. Pigs.— There was a small supply of good quality pigs, which sold up to £1 17s. CANTERBURY GRAIN & PRODUCE- ( Latest Report.) Transactions in the grain market during the week have been exceedingly limited, and the feeling in almost every department is one of extreme quietness. The weather
lately has been extrcmelj’ hot, and in some districts a fall of rain would be Wheat finds buyers at late quotations. Best milling is quoted at 4s 3d to 4s sd, and extra quality a trifle higher. Inferior parcels have been moved at 3s 3d to 3s lOd. Chick, Is 6d to 2s 6d according to sample. Oats arc without the slightest alteration, and buyers continue comparatively indifferent. Best milling stand at Is 6d to Is Bd, and for feed Is 3d to Is 5d represent the quotation. Bap.lev is quoted at 3s 3d to 3s 6d for the best parcels, and lower grades in small lots have been sold at 2s 6d to 2s lOd. Feed lots are quiet. Flour.—A fair business has transpired at the price, £lO 10s to £ll. Rye-Grass. —Cutting in some parts has commenced, but the season is too early for the hulk. No forward safes of the new season’s seed have come under notice. There have been a few trifling enquiries for small lots for shipment, but nothing of any moment has taken place.
