GOLD IN MANAWATU.
Quartz taken from a reef in the Manawatu district is reported to have yielded 2-k ounces to the ton in the crushing last week. The facts are doubtful at present, and rumors arc contradictory. The Manawatu Times say : u Mr Goodisson informs us that his son Harry brought in a packet of quartz on Wednesday, which was fastened with sealing wax before leaving the camp, and delivered into Mr Hoard’s hands intact. The rumor then is that the contents of the parcel was crushed on Saturday and found to contain oozs to the ton; but we much question if this be true. Mr Goodisson said his son tried to get some information as to the yield, but he was kept completely in the dark, and the consequence was that he, in company with Mr Otto Tiller, a gentleman of undoubted integrity and a most experienced quartz miner, started on Monday morning to take possesssion oi the reef from whence the stone has been taken. We have also heard that a second party, provided with a month’s provisions, started yesterday. Mr Goodisson claims first right to the reef for his son, and as he started on Monday, no doubt he is determined to maintain it.”
