LARGE FIRE AT TIMARU.

On Friday night, the Tiraarn Mechanics’ Institute, valued at £3OOO, was totally destroyed by fire. The fire broke out shortly after 10 o’clock, and in a few minutes the whole building was in Haines, ami by 11 o’clock it was destroyed. Part of it was old dry wood. All the books and furniture were destroyed, and the Church of England bazaar people had luckily, cleared all the balance of their goods out, except about £2O worth. No clue as to the origin of the fire has as yet been found, but broke out at the back of the stage, a part of which was locked up at 7 p.tn. Several adjoining buildings were in great danger for some time. The Court House, next door, being of concrete did not suffer.
