PATEA COUNTY MAIL PUBLISHED Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1880. LOAN RUMOUR.
Another Loan is said to he projected by the Ministry, and that Sir Dillon Bell is appointed to the Agent-General-ship for the purpose of carrying out this scheme when the three-years promise expires. We don’t believe it. A loan may be good policy at the end of that term—say two years hence—to be raised for specific purposes ; but the Ministry have to reckon with electors before that time, and though wc do not see the materials for a better Ministry at present, a change of system is desirable in order to rid the colony of this pernicious party warfare and party juggling. Leading politicians should bo honest, independent, and above tlic wretched suspicion of wire - pulling by land - rings and by political-railway jobbers. Certain land transactions on a gigantic scale have been allowed to slip through, to the advantage ot notorious supporters of the “ Continuous Ministry.” This may be winked at, but it is a robbery of the public estate for the enrichment of moneyed schemers, and those who abet the system must be held politically and morally accountable. The present land policy is unworthy of men of political capacity.
