RECEIVED LAST NIGHT. LATEST FROM PARIHAKA. Wellington, Wednesday. To-day’s official telegram from Constabulary cam preports that the natives, according to their promise of yesterday, have removed a whare which they had inadvertently built partly on the road line. Fencers advanced and retreated as usual. PAUPER BABY. Wellington, Wednesday. A woman applied for assistance at yesterday’s meeting of the Benevolent Cemmittee under the following circumstances ; A barmaid in this city had intrusted to her custody an iliegetimate child, promising remuneration at the rate of 10s per week. Several weeks had passed since she took charge of the infant. Its father had quitted town, and the promised payments had not been forthcoming. The mother had pleaded inability to pay. The nurse of the infant is in great distress, and wished the committee to advise her what course to pursue. One member of the committee said they should not commence to undertake the charge of such children, or they would find all the deserted babies in Wellington placed on tbeir hands. Ultimately it was decided to advise the applicant to sue the mother* before the R.M., the relieving officer being authorised to pay the necessary fees of the action.
