SOFT SAWDER.

Westland accuses Taranaki of growing fat by drain’ng the resources of the South Island. Taranaki replies that Westland mining is going to the dogs ; that three-quarters of a million sterling have been spent on water-races and other public works that have proved useless; and that the only hope for Westlauders is to bo maintained in an infirmary by the charity of Taranaki—and other North Island provinces. The funny part of Taranaki’s reply is this : “ The New Plymouth Harbor Works are certainly a work of magnitude—equal in proportions perhaps to the Waimca water-race; but as the cost eventually is to be raised from Taranaki resources, and the securities are securities, the colony is not so deeply concerned. If Taranaki is really growingin fatness upon the comparatively little that has as yet been expended upon it, it is proof conclusive that the money has been judiciously expended.” We would point out that this is the old smug argument that New Plymouth is Taranaki, and that all the settlers and all the land within the old provincial area belong of right to New Plymouth !
