Jersey cattle arc now making larger averages at public sales than shorthorns in the United States, and the same may be said in reference to recent sales in England. A pure bred shorthorn bull from the herd of the Duke of Holkcr,has been sold for 1200 guineas. Amongst the great men who have been leaders of the House of Commons, several entered Parliament when comparatively verv young. Mr Pelham entered at 22, Lord Chatham at 26, Mr Fox at 20, Mr Pitt at 21, Mr Canning at 22, and the first Sir R. Peel at 21. A Moscow correspondent of the Cologne Gazette describes the misery and starvation prevailing in the south and south-east of Russia as unknown to (he memory of man. No food is to be got for the horses and cattle for any money, and the animals are consequently dying everywhere of starvation in the Transural Steppes and the Don Steppes, Apple Blight.— We ("Advocate) were recently shown a remedy by Mr Rees Thomas, which is not only cheap but extremely simple, and consists simply in the application of spirits of turpentine with a soft brush. The remedy is instantaneous ; the blight melts away like sugar in spirits, and the turpentine is perfectly harmless to the tree, no matter how delicate it may be.
