Monday Evsning, ROAD BOARD MEETING.

A meeting of the Board was held at the secretary’s office on Saturday. All the commissioners were present.

Correspondence : H G Morecroft, Ward Bros., R O Hendy, D G Fraser, Public Works (2), Petition from Ngaire settlers. Resolved that Mr Twigg be instructed to get the work done on Whereroa-road. Mr Gane asked why tenders had not been called for work on Ingahape-road. The secretary said lie had only that clay, received the specifications. The chairman also stated that he asked for the sanction of the Waste Land Board, but had received no reply.

Mr Hunter proposed, and Mr Allan seconded, that the resolution passed at last meeting calling for tenders for work on the Ingahape-road bo rescinded. Mr Gane proposed, and Mr Williams seconded, that the work bo proceeded with.

The original motion was carried. Proposed by Mr Gane, and seconded by Mr Hunter, that no more deferred payment money be spent until ad outstanding liabilities be paid. Mr Allan proposed that works on the Mells and West-roads requiring to be done, that about three chains be done on these roads. Seconded by Mr Robson. The original motion was carried.

It was resolved that Mr Morecroft’s letter be acknowledged, and that the secretary state that the Board cannot undertake the impounding of cattle off the roads.

Proposed by Mr Williams, and seconded by Mr Gane, that the engineer bo authorised to remove the obstruction on the Manawapou-road after the 7th inst. Resolved, that the secretary be instructed to write to Messrs McL’Dowie, Perry, and Co., and John Weeks, to remove the obstruction on the Manawapou-road within one month.

Resolved, that Messrs Morrison and Robson accompany the engineer and inspect the roads in the Ngairo District, and that the day be notified in the Hawera Star on Wednesday ; and also that the chairman write to the authorities enquiring what amount is available. Resolved, that a special meeting be held on Saturday, the 16th inst. to receive the report of the engineer and commissioners.

Mr Hunter stated he had interviewed Mr Bryce re roads on Whereroa Reserve, but did not get a satisfactory reply. Mr Bryce said the Government intended to pass a measure dealing with such matters.

Resolved, that a notice be inserted in the Star cautioning people from depositing rubbish on the roads within the district.

Proposed by Mr Robson, and seconded by Mr Morrison, that lenders be called for bush falling, and clearing about 12 ft. in the clear on the Katene-road. Carried.

Resolved, that the engineer inspect and report how much it would take to make a bridle track on the Whakamara-road.

Resolved, that the engineer also report on the Meretnere and Allan-roads, by Baird’s, and report next meeting. Mr Gane reported that the commissioners who were appointed to open tenders had received the following for ploughing, &c.:—W Wallace, 6s lOd per chain ; Brennner and Davies, 5s 4d per chain. Mr Wallace’s tender, although not the lowest, was accepted. Bush falling : J West, 4s per chain (accepted); J C Holgerson, £3 12s (declined). A long discussion ensued, Mr Allan stating that, as one of the committee, lie strongly objected to the Board losing £25, by accepting the highest tender.

Tenders for work on Te Whiti-road : Thomas Whelan, £l9 10s ; Humphries and May, £3l 10s. Mr Whelan’s tender was accepted, subject to Mr Riddiford paying £4 10s. Accounts passed : Galvin and Co.£4 Is.; G V Bate, £9 2s Id ; J Twigg, £1 6s ; W Wallace, progress and payment, £4O ; J West, £3 3s.
