MONSTER STEAMER.

The largest steamer in the world next to the Great Eastern, is being built for the Inman line of Atlantic steamers. It is named the City of Rome, and the contract is taken by the Barrow Shipbuilding Co, Lancashire. Her length will be 600 feet, breadth, 52feet 3in., depth of hold 37feet. She will carry 3000 emigrant passengers, and 271 saloon passengers. Her draught will be 28feet, and her displacement 13,500, equal to a deadweight carrying power of 5,500 tons besides machinery. The hull is divided into water-tight compartments, and a double bottom is provided at the fore and aft ends in case of stranding. The single screw will be 24feet in diameter, driven by three sets of compound engines. The shaft is compound Whitworth steel, weighing 64 tons. There are eight boilers, each having six furnaces. The

engines are 8,000 horse power indicated? working up to 10,000. This monster floating palace will be ready for the Atlantic trade about eight months hence.
