DISABLED STEAMER, Wellington, Wednesday. The Jane Douglas, which leaves Foxton, is telegraphed to call at Kapiti island to tow into Wellington the Manawatu steamer, which got disabled on her voyage to Wanganui. Yesterday the Tui brought some of her passengers back to Wellington,
EAST COAST NATIVES. Gisborne, Wednesday. A meeting of East Coast natives has been held here, 400 being present, ostensibly to commemorate the memory of To Kama, a noted chief who died some years ago. The meeting virtually meant something else. A resolution was passed that Te Kooti and other arch-rebels should be invited to return to Gisborne.
TARANAKI HARBOR.. Wellington, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Governor in Council to-day, the New Plymouth harbor plans as amended by Sir John Goode were approved. The Board arc calling for tenders for a portion of the work immediately.
■ MURDER. Auckland, Wednesday. An atrocious crime lias been committed by a Fijian native in this town. Edward Race, new North Road, was found lying in the road on Monday night, near the Eden Yale Hotel. There was a cnt on the back of the skull which had caused death. He had evidently been attacked from behind. A native of Fiji who was seen near the place has been taken into custody, after a long chase ami violent resistance. He was traced to Mount Albert district on Tuesday morning, where he broke the arm of a washerwoman and got away, but was pursued and captured; He was brough before the R.M. to-day, and remanded.
WOMAN SHOT. Wellington, Wednesday. An accident occurred in Mannersstreet to-day, resulting in the accidental shooting of a woman in Walker’s rifle gallery. The wound is considered serious.
SUSPECTED WRECKING.
Christchurch, Wednosday
Edward Kearns, mate of the ketch Sarah and Mary, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for stealing a binocular glass and signal book The ship was wrecked under suspicious circumstances.
