KAKARAMEA.

(from our correspondent.')

Wednesday Evening:

Our town continues steadily to increase. Cottages are going up, and additions to other buildings are being made. Carpenters seem just now to have a fair time of it, and it is to be hoped they may have enough employment to deter them from “ seeking fresh fields and pastures new.” Of late several town sections have changed hands, at I believe satisfactory prices to the vendors. This is encouraging. I hear too that some of the men engaged on the railway, which is being pushed on rapidly, have decided on locating themselves, and with that view sent for their wives and families. A meeting of the Library Committee was held at the Town Hall on Monday. Present : Messrs Brown, Slater, Salmon, and Willis. The appointment of an auditor for the past year constituted the principal business. This was necessary as the present committee will be out of office next month. It was resolved that Mr R. E. Mcßae be appointed auditor. Account passed for payment, Patea Mail, £1 4s. In connection with the Institute, it is to be regretted that as yet but one or two of the new comers to our town have become members, lam assured that many of them are very fairly educated, and therefore it- is somewhat surprising that they fail to take advantage of the benefits which are to be derived from joining so valuable an institution. Surely the admission fee does not scare them. Church of England affairs are in a very sorry state. I understand there will be no services held here for some time ; in fact not until the arrears of stipend due to the incumbent are paid.
