WAVERLEY.

[from our correspondent.]

BRANCH OFFICE OF THE,MAIL, . Wednesday Evening.

Erratum.— ln the list of owners of draught entries as published on Tuesday, you place Mr J. Thurston, Waverley, as owner of Prince of Canterbury instead of Mr John Johnston, who, to distinguish him from all the other Johnstons, is better known as “Loch Ryan Johnston.” The mistake is easily accounted for in the similarity of the names when rapidly written. The dam is a Tasmanian mare. Our Pound.— This establishment continues of little public benefit, and lias not improved in the hands of the present pound-keeper. It may be accident, but one man seems to be the chief infringer of the Impounding Acts. It did not suit a publican to be pound-keeper, and it does not suit a tradesman; but the office might on its next begging tour be taken in hand by some one who has time and inclination to regularly attend to it, or leave every man to impound for himself when he finds lie is agrieved. Magistrate’s Court.— Captain Wray held his court here on Monday,—There were several cases brought before him of defaulting ratepayers, &c., but of no public interest. One case caused some amusement and a little disgust to find how indifferently some men seem to value their oath. For the sake of all concerned, the evidence need not be criticised, nor the parties mentioned, as they must have felt their position, and that they were only supplying food for scandal.
