WAVERLEY.

[FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.] ERANCH OFFICE OF THE MAIL. Monday Evening. Volunteers. —An inspection of our Cavalry and Rifles took place on Saturday afternoon, about a score of members of each company being present. I.hey engaged in skirmishing practice, in which the rides had the advantage, as many of the troopers’ horses seemed inclined to be troublesome when facing a discharge of blank cartridge. After Major Noakc left the ground, the rifles were put through skirmishing exercise by Sergeant Whelan. The afternoon’s practice gave rise to some good-natured chaff as to the doings of memborb of the different corps. A Meeting of the cavalry was held in the evening. The capitation money was paid over, when each member subscribed a pound share towards replacing the value of cloth lost somewhere, but certainly not here. The company is to try to get rid of this claim by an appeal to law, when, if the case is decided in their favour, the money will be refunded to members. The new belt got in place of the one destroyed when Messrs Milnes’s house was burned, was handed over to Lieutenant Thurston, (he present holder of the trophy, as the highest scorer in the troop. It is a pretty piece of workmanship. The Weather. —Yesterday we had a heavy fall of vain ; to-day the weather has been cold and rather rough. Should a few mild days follow wo may expect a very rapid growth both in the gardens and the fields.
